According to the Home Office, schools in Britain are not taking the issue of homophobia seriously enough, while issues such as racism are taken more seriously. The government paper, which cites homophobic abuse as bullying urges more pupils and their parents and guardians to report homophobia. At present it is estimated that 90% of all homophobic abuse goes unreported.

The report which called for "lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual awareness week" as part of the government’s citizenship classes claimed that the effects of this kind of bullying can have damaging effects on the academic achievement of the children affected. Aiming to improve the way police and other order agencies in the UK deal with hate crime against gays, the report suggested that complaints could be made online.

The report admitted that: "Whilst it is probably made clear to pupils that the use of racist language is unacceptable, the same is not true for use of homophobic language.

"However, constant use of such language and homophobic crimes and incidents will have an effect on pupils' ability to learn, or willingness to stay on in schools," it added. There were over 1,000 reported homophobic incidents in London alone last year, but police estimate about 90% of hate crime goes unreported.

I think Yeliz you are being racist. I don't care for the generalisation you make regarding black people. Anyone reading this would think it true. In fact black people do not get preferential treatment as you say. I have seen it first hand during my school years, where black children were treated as unruly and with contempt by white teachers. One boy got hit in the eye with the edge of a book, then the teacher said to him "Things like you I see down the toilet" and nothing was ever done about it. It still makes me mad when I think about it. But as for homophobia, I think in Britain most homophobic boys are probably bi-sexual or gay and themselves in denial about it.

RE: Sinem. Never mind the T/C community, the British are just as bad. In Britain most school boys make homophobic remarks at school daily. most teachers i have winessed simply do nothing, they dont care, if you say "F&%$£ turk" then they will still ignore them, but if you made a comment about a black person then you would lynhed by a mob of teachers.

what i think would be a good idea for an article would be the extent of homophobia in the turkish cypriot community. as a community we go on about how modern we all are because we display pictures of ataturk, drink coca cola and wear mini skirts and denim jeans but when it comes to our mentality over social matters such as homosexuality, we are still stuck in the 16th century!

in a country where any racist is quickly and harshly punished, we seem to tolerate homophobia, in fact many of those who attack gay people themselves were once victims of racism.

Thank god you are the only Turkish newspaper to bring this injustice to peoples attention. Other Turkish newspapers in London always shy away from such issues preferring to write about tabloid nonesense.
