In a great step of good will, Turkish Cypriots walked along the hot tarmac roads of north Cyprus’ interior last Sunday in solidarity with the Cypriot Maronites. In a new campaign led by the New Cyprus Party (YKP) entitled “Let the Maronites return now” hundreds of progressive Turkish Cypriots met in front of the party’s building at 10am in Nicosia before boarding a bus to Asomatos / Ozhan. At Ozhan / Asomatos the group protested the restrictions on the Cypriot Maronite community by both the Turkish Cypriot authorities and the Turkish military and urged an end to these restrictions as a confidence building gesture. Organised by Murat Kanatli, the YKP campaign has already gained widespread attention. Maronite villages like Asomatos / Ozhan have remained sealed off in military zones in north Cyprus for the last 34 years.
