UK Cypriot campaign group Cypriots for Cyprus (C4C) welcomed the visit of Queen Elisabeth II to Turkey last week. The British monarch visited the country for only the second time – the first was in 1971 – to lend support to Turkey's EU accession and role in bringing stability to the Middle East, including to fellow Commonwealth country and EU member, Cyprus.
"The Queen's visit marks a period when the elected AK Party faces closure. It's important for European heads of state who believe in democracy to support Turkey's democratically elected government at this testing time. Only a democratic Turkey can help resolve the Cyprus problem," said C4C coordinator Alkan Chaglar.
"We see Turkey's EU path as a bridge to reuniting Cyprus and its people. We hope that Turkey will continue its efforts for a solution to the Cyprus problem," added C4C member George Beitis. |
