At least six people have been killed and over 102 injured in an explosion in the Turkish capital, Ankara. The suicide bomb attack, which exploded at rush hour in Ankara’s busy shopping district of Ulus is reported to have detonated near a bus stop. The attack created a scene of chaos as shoppers rushed to get away from the horrific scene. It is reported by officials that the methods used in the attack near Anafartalar shopping centre were similar to those used by Kurdish rebels in similar atacks in South Eastern Turkey. However, some groups have blamed Islamists while others suspect right-wing political parties may have planted the bomb ahead of election time to appeal to angry voters. In a statement mad after th explosion, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not directly blame the PKK of involvement, but suggested that it was a main suspect in the attack. Previously the Turkish government expressed concerns of the risk of PKK attacks on Turkish cities. In a bid to deal with the security crisis, Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul called an emergency meeting yesterday to plan new security measures, and launch a nationwide security sweep. Although the perpetrators of the attack are still unclear, Turkish police have detained seven people. |
