A new committee was elected last week at the Sydenham based centre of the South London Turkish Elderly Association at its AGM.
Members of the South London Turkish Elderly Association were present at last Friday’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) to elect a new committee for 2007 and to review the progress of the charity. Members who were present re-elected Management Committee members Fatma Nesrin Sıtkı, Aliye Hasan, Najan Mehmet, Şaziye Kansoy and Mehmet Reşat, while former committee members Arife Raşet, Ismet Hasan and Ayşe Aydın Hasan resigned from their posts. Th AGM was chaired by Centre Coordinator Fatma Nesrin Sıtkı, Lewisham Cllr Abdul Said and was attended by Chairman of the Council of Turkish Associations in the UK Akmen Ali Sıtkı as well as former Chaiman of the Erenkoy Veterans Association Mehmet Reşat. Coordinator of the Centre Mrs Fatma Nesrin Sıtkı emphasized the importance of the Centre, which she claimed helps local Turkish-speaking residents with all manner of problems ranging from housing issues, moving houses, general advice to helping families deal with their problems. The Centre with works alongside the Police and Local Government and Services, helps women in need, with confidentiality always respected. In a speech made before members casted their votes, Chairman Akmen Ali Sıtkı reminded guests that South London has been left behind and forgotten as delegates from Northern Cyprus and Turkey always go to North London when visiting the UK. Disappointed that Lewisham Council had only offered the Centre £1500 in funding, Mr Sitki re-iterated the importance of securing enough funding from the local authorities to help the Centre continue its vital service to the community. Mrs Nesrin Sitki added that the Centre, which is open to all South London residents regardless of the borough they reside in, planned to extend its services to include exercise and computer classes as well as a weekly blood pressure monitoring session. The Centre can be found at 117 Vennon Road, Sydenham, SE6. Tel: 02086931873 |
