Thomas Harris is the author that introduced two classic characters made famous by Hollywood – rookie FBI agent Clarice Starling, and Dr Hannibal Lecter, brilliant and cultured forensic psychiatrist turned cannibalistic serial killer (played by Jodie Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins respectively). In The Silence of the Lambs, Harris’ sequel to his first novel Red Dragon, Starling is on the trail of notorious serial killer Buffalo Bill, and enlists the help of Lecter in her quest to track him down before he can strike again. The novel moves along at a frenetic pace, and Harris constantly keeps us on the edges of our seats. If you’ve seen the film, it’s difficult to imagine the main characters as anything other than the Hollywood actors who portrayed them, however Harris’ development of character is first class – you learn so much more about Clarice and Lecter’s characters by reading the book than you do from the film. If you enjoy crime/horror books, this is one of the best. In parts terrifying, compelling, and on the whole you’ll find it hard to put down.
