If you always thought of Germany as one of those places really big on Christmas then you’re not far off. There are some great markets to visit around this time of year and with cheap flights a plenty it’s a great excuse to treat yourself. Away from all the commercialism of Christmas, German Christmas markets offer traditional handicrafts and gifts of real quality. You can also sample some delicious German fayre such as hot chestnuts, grilled sausages, Lebkuchen (German biccies that the kids will love), mulled wine and baked apples. Here’s a selection to entice you:
Cologne - There are six Christmas markets in Cologne including the medieval Christmas market held on the Neumarkt, the city centre in the shopping district, overlooking the Rhine and situated in front of the Chocolate Museum. There's the floating Christmas market aboard the MS Wappen von Mainz in front of the Old Town as well as the impressive market located at the cathedral.
Hamburg - There are three markets that attract visitors from all over the world, Gerhardt-Hauptmann-Platz in the Spitaleershasse, one around the Petrikirche and one at the Gansemarkt, that has a wonderful appearance with its arts and crafts, impressive Christmas decorations and an array of toys which will appeal to both children and adults alike!
Munich - Munich's Christmas market or `Chriskindlmarkt', dates back to the 14th century and to this day opens on the first Friday before the start of advent. Thousands gather on the Marienplatz to watch the 30 metre high Christmas tree sparkle to life with 2500 candles.
