It’s been described as “a Lord of the Flies for the Generation X,” and you’ve probably seen the disappointing film adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Alex Garland’s debut novel is told from the perspective of Richard, a young British backpacker travelling in Thailand. Given a mysterious map to the legendary beach, a supposed island paradise that few have discovered, he sets off in search of adventure along with two French tourists he has befriended. Having found the island, and what seems like an undiscovered paradise on earth, things begin to fall apart. Brought up on a diet of video games, TV news and marijuana, the boundaries of reality slowly begin to blur for Richard as the island’s community begins to crumble. Garland’s fast paced writing style makes this book a joy to read, and you’ll find it hard to put down. The book has achieved cult status, and it’s no surprise why. Garland captures perfectly the cynicism and disconnection of his generation, saturated with popular culture and searching for an unspoiled landscape that doesn’t actually exist. Don’t judge this book by the film’s standards; this is an excellent novel by one of Britain’s most promising young authors.
