Widely considered one of the greatest novels ever written, Joseph Heller’s Catch – 22, 45 years from the date of it’s first publication, has stood the test of time. Set in the midst of the Second World War, the story follows a soldier called Yossarian, and portrays his desperate attempts to stay alive. He fights a constant battle against both sides – “The enemy…is anybody who’s going to get you killed, no matter which side he’s on…” and it is this absurdity that makes the book as relevant today as it was 45 years ago. The term Catch – 22, coined by Heller, has become a word in it’s own right, meaning a problem where any possible solution is actually another problem in disguise. It is this constant battle, not only against the enemy, but against his own side, the military and it’s bureaucracy, that makes the book so readable. The absurdity of war is interspersed with moments of grisly realism and side-splitting humour, and for WW2 you could just as easily substitute Vietnam, Gulf, the war in Iraq or even the war on worldwide terrorism. Read this book and you may just understand what the protests are all about.
