OK, OK, I know you single guys and gals are probably sick of having this festival of love shoved down your throat and on every wall and billboard wherever you walk but hey, it’s the season of love, what can I say…!  Of course, by the time you read this it will be the 15th but I thought I’d do it anyway.  I love this time of year, at the very least, it’s a chance to just smile, smile, smile and show love all around.  Whether you are with someone or not, it’s just nice to be nice.  Luckily for me, I am with someone and he’s just peachy.  Going from being someone who has never really been in to the whole Valentine’s saga and all that, to now be totally and utterly head over heels and staying up all night to bake cakes and cookies for the one I love, I’ve got to say that’s a mighty achievement.  Of course, where did it all begin?  Valentine’s Day that is, not my relationship!  Where else but that old land of romance, Roma.  The story goes, well actually, a few stories go but here’s the main few, courtesy of www.pictureframes.co.uk

“Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries. Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it "From Your Valentine". Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers. There was often a social gathering or a ball.”  So there you have it, and let’s all celebrate with this delicious cookie recipe for that special someone.
