“Forty years after Christopher Columbus discovered America, Jacques Cartier took possession of this land on behalf of the king of France.” States the official tourist website of the government of Quebec, www.bonjourquebec.com and since that time Quebec has become a city that is rich with culture, full of restaurants of gastronomic quality, and a history to match.   As Canada’s largest province, Quebec as much to offer not least the Quebecers pride in its French heritage.  This is a town embracing both the old and new, with a people well known for their joie de vivre.  Although French is the nationally spoken language, English is widely used so visitors should have no problem being understood.  Religious architecture is highly prominent and go hand in hand in Quebec since they are a nation of mixed Catholic/Protestant origin.  Along with influences from 17th century France there is plenty to explore.  The Notre-Dame-du-Cap Sanctuary near Trois-Rivières is an important shrine and popular pilgrimage site for over 100 years. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the original chapel built in 1714 still remains.

If it’s a good time you’re after then you’ve come to the right place.  There are many festivals and events going on all year round and a quick look at the website, www.bonjourquebec.com will give you a full events calendar.  The internationally famous, Carnaval de Quebec, running from January 27th to February 11th, 2007 features arts, culture, sports and entertainment perfect for the whole family.  Quebecers are well known for their fine dining and as food is a major part of the Quebecers life, check out the many restaurants dotted around.  You’ll find a French foundation with modern twists to your meal and all made with passion.  Try one of the many ciders from the Montérégie region or venture in to the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, and indulge in some smoking salmon, trout, sturgeon and eel made in the traditional style of their ancestors.

All in all Quebec has much to offer is a must see experience in your lifetime.  To get there try www.expedia.com or www.travelsphere.co.uk for some good package and flight deals leaving Heathrow airport.
