If you’ve ever seen Martin Scorcese’s film Goodfellas (and if you haven’t, go see it!), you’ll know the story – Henry Hill, half Irish American half Sicilian, works his way into the world of the Mafia in New York in the 60’s and 70’s. The book’s narrative switches between Pileggi’s factual insights, Henry’s descriptions of mafia lifestyle and Henry’s wife Karen’s views of life from the inside. “At the age of twelve my ambition was to be a gangster. To me being a wiseguy was better than being president of the United States.” From Henry’s humble beginnings as a 12-year-old errand boy, the book describes his rise to fully-fledged foot soldier for the Vario crime family, and the violence, money, and lifestyle that came with it. The pace of the book whizzes along at break neck speed and the prose is easy and enjoyable to read. Henry makes no secret of the fact that he loved the glamour and lifestyle of mafia involvement, and that the only regret he has when it’s all over is that he “gets to live the rest of his life like a schnook.” Highly recommended.
