From the creator of Fight Club comes Chuck Palahniuk’s fourth novel, Choke. The book centres around Victor Mancini, a man in his mid-twenties who has dropped out of medical school to find work to pay his sick mothers nursing home bills. His mother, Ida, happens to be an anarchist whose social terror campaigns made Victor’s childhood unstable and ensured stays in and out of foster homes. Victor works in a colonial era theme park, however to supplement this has devised an ingenious con. Victor visits restaurants and pretends to choke on his food. The people who save him feel responsible for his life and send him money whenever he requests it. Victor also happens to be a sex addict, and engages in lewd acts of physical gratification in the bathroom across the hall from his weekly Sexaholics Anonymous meetings. Victor also believes that, partly through his mothers Alzheimer’s fuelled ramblings, he may just be the Second coming of Jesus Christ. Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Chuck Palahniuk. If you liked Fight Club, you’ll love this – witty, satirical, absurd, and at times shocking, like its famous predecessor Choke could soon be gracing our cinemas too.
